Diana Berger Gallery presents Apperception, a two-person exhibition featuring Devin Lee Johnson and Jennifer Montenegro.
Curated by Humberto Reynoso.
Apperception is the process in which the brain references past experiences to make sense of a new one: centering cognitive exploration in visual art. Referencing the Thematic Apperception Test developed in the 1930's, Apperception encourages art interpretation and narrative development by finding familiar shapes, colors and materials while observing art. The artist's work then becomes a tool for self-reflection, and the interpretation, an insight of the psyche. The focus shifts from the artist's intention and onto the viewer's experience. In this new body of work, Johnson and Montenegro approach similar introspective visual conversations where scale, line, color, and material engage the imagination.
